How much for Motion Graphics?
Simply put, $70-$100 dollars a produced second, for motion graphics costs. Produced, being deliverable, finished content. In example, a commercial you see on T.V. lasts about 25 seconds. The brand that ordered the spot paid anywhere from $1750-$2500 for the cost of those motion graphics. Do not confuse motion graphics with say a car ad, using actors and shot video like Mercedes, Toyota, Audi, etc. Motion Graphics are the Graphics created on a computer that fly in, fly out, etc. Usually referred to as station ID or Bumpers. That is only part of advertising, then there is (SFX) “special effects”. Things like a person shooting lasers out of their hands, eyes, smoke, vaporizing, giants, etc. To get a better understanding of motion graphics and special effects. In the example video below for the most part are motion graphics, using templates I own, or created. At the very end there is lightning coming out of a camera that charges up the Netcommercial.net logo, that lightning would be considered special effects, combined with motion graphics.

Picasso’s answer to Motion Graphics costs
Picasso was sitting in a BAR, there was a man sitting beside him that recognized him as the great artist Picasso, and asks; “Would you draw something quick and easy for me on this napkin?” Picasso looks at him curiously, grabs a pen and whips out a cute little drawing. “Ahh, that’s awesome, it looks great. What do I owe you?” Asked the man. Picasso replies; “100,000. Should cover it, it’s only a small drawing.”
“100,000 DOLLARS!” the man exclaimed. Picasso replied; “Yes, 100,000, since I did not need to paint it, of course.” The man replies; “You want a 100,000 dollars for something that took you 1 minute to whip out on a napkin?” Picasso; “Well you were the one who asked for it on a napkin, besides you are not paying me 100,000 for One minute worth of work, you are paying me for knowing how to whip that art work out, quick and easy, as you’ve asked.”
The point of the Picasso story and Motion Graphic costs, is that today’s motion graphics costs are for one; tied to the cost of a computer to create them on. IE: The Video card in a computer for graphics, costs about $700, for an entry level decent video card. The whole workstation computer can easily run $5000. Secondly, the software needed can range from one piece of software cost range from $2300. up to $4000 for legit software to create motion graphics with. Third, there is the tutelage of learning, how to use these intricate costly software programs. Some take years to get a decent understanding of how to use their parameters. If a client wants two types of Motion Graphics, 2d and 3d along with special effects. In essence they are wanting at least two different pieces of software to be used, in a masterful way of course. Along with the time to create what the client had envisioned and then there are the changes asked by said client. I think after putting things into perspective one could soon realize how the costs of motion graphics are justified. Maybe when there is an app for that… Well is there an app for that?
Motion Graphics Application or App
Well they are getting there, sort-of. There are websites out there that provide stick figurines with canned electronic voices for a voice over with a few preset colors of fly-in text. A Small spot where you can insert your logo. Yet, how long is that overly used, cheap, canned graphic, going to last? I am sure like most, it will be recognized as “that canned motion graphics app”, then will just be overlooked. The couple hundred dollars a website owner spent on it, will never be utilized or even previewed, just overlooked as the viewer expects, the same old thing. Due to the viewer knowing what they are going to see. A canned, seen before, lack luster, minimum budget, motion graphic with that Brand’s version of the same old’- same-old’. That brings us to custom motion graphics, or maybe even just a template? As most of the stuff in the example below are from templates that I own and do have the license to use. A template can bring down the cost of your motion Graphic..
Custom ordered Motion Graphics
Yep, we got em’. From 2d to 3d, actors, to motion graphics. Price? Well that depends on what you want. Not to be evasive. I think the first paragraph on motion graphic costs, pretty much sums it up. I have some cool canned templates I have payed for and or designed, where I need only to spend just a couple of days on your motion graphics and pass that savings on to you. A Picasso, with spots to be filled in with your content, if you will. Not that I am Picasso, rather I can whip out some pretty intricate stuff quickly.
When we get into custom characters, virtual worlds, is when we shift in to industry standard pricing. Websites and Motion Graphics
Motion Graphics are here to stay…If you have an online presence and want to SEO rank, be effective, and recalled. You will have to come aboard; period. The day of a flat static webpage with a couple of pics, will be disregarded as BORING, and non performing. Go compare your competitions pages and honestly answer, does your page just lay there? Until there is an app that will allow you whip up a piece of art on a napkin, you will need a motion graphics artist to convey your skit, brand, slogan, motto, etc. Furthermore when there is an app for motion graphics, those motion graphics created by that app will have to be created by motion graphic artists with only a few different variations.
