Web Advertising like any other advertising campaign, takes big bucks to compete with those who have the big bucks to spend. Is there a work around? First, let’s hit the challenge head on. If you could advertise with the big boys, side by side, on whatever media a consumer uses to find goods or services. In this case web advertising. Would they pick your brand over a well branded company? Remember, people flock to name brand. You do it when you buy bleach. All conditions being the same. In other words, both gallons of that bleach, side by side; “a name brand vs generic, or not so known name brand” Both having the same ingredient(s), both do the exact same job, same price. Which do you select? Choose the well branded bleach, or try the new brand? Due to the price no longer an issue. Case and Point.
Along that line of thinking you need to specialize. IE: Specializing is Microsoft’s biggest challenge. Albeit the biggest software maker out there, thus far. Yet, MS is the one who created the browser Explorer, but because MS dabbles in everything, therefore everything is not maximized. Allows an opportunity like FireFox browser, which was made by two teenage/twenty something guys who never physically met each other, just corresponded on the net, 1000’s of miles apart. FireFox Browser is now a huge browser company that now, newer start-up company(s) want to emulate. Point being, they passed Explorer, a huge software company by Specializing. You can too!
Web Advertising is Just that
When you decided to venture out and start your own business. Thinking; “Hey I can do that, with low overhead of web advertising on the Net in all.” Then you realized that you are just another virtual store front, next to another virtual store front. Yet, those with the flash and testimonials are the one’s who seem to be getting bigger and bigger or “all the business”. Maybe it’s because they specialized and you did not? Did you check them out as a consume and instead of biased competition?
Unless you have big money for Web Advertising
As mentioned, unless you have ‘big bucks’ and the resources to compete, then don’t, specialize instead. Use a key phrase to propel you to the top of that key arena. If you truly do specialize, your work or product will show it. You will soon have testimonials from people who have a sphere of influences who will then refer you, and you too will have your niche’ on the net.
Web Advertising and Failure
Have you ever heard the phrase? “Too big to fail” How about, “To big too fast”. That is because some Co’s will over extend themselves too fast to keep up with their foresight. I am not telling you to think small and stay small. Rather with Web Advertising, you need to concentrate on your niche’. If the demand is there, then expand. Only if you can duplicate yourself. Via a manager and more staff to handle it. Working 80 hours a week is not successful if one person is doing two jobs. Use your web advertising strategically and with some hindsight. Notice what has worked, what has failed. What is getting attention, what is propelling you and your business. See what your competitors are doing or what looks good. Try and be unbiased look as a consumer, when you check out your competition. If their website is professional looking compared to yours, what does your future customer think? Perception is everything, these days.
The Nitty-Gritty’ of Web Advertising
Ok, so most of the stuff I wrote makes sense. So the question is…Where do I spend my web advertising dollar? Let’s make an outline first.
1. Target audience- Who is going to look for you when they need your service. Don’t say everyone, otherwise you would not be here if your commodity was that enthralling or desired. If you are a cleaning service. Everyone needs their place cleaned. Whether or not they hire someone is two different things. However, are you residential, commercial, specialize in antiques, etc. That is knowing your Target audience.
2. Identify with your audience- Corporate Co’s does not want hip-hop themes for their vendors. These are some of the things I consider when identifying and begin to convey when I put together some web advertising videos for Corperate. Does you audience use Tablets, Iphones and other portable media devices? If so you may want to do some web advertising, via social media. Chances are, if their audience have those devices they are involved with some form of social media. Website commercials ‘rock‘ for that. Small, entertaining format that can be passed or shared with all. No one likes to read. So Kudos to you if you took the time to read this. You are one step ahead of the game.
3. Feel, Felt, Found- This is the key to ALL sales. By using those three Nouns you will have mastered the art of sales, as long as you listen first. With Web Advertising you do not have the luxury of listening to the newest customer. However, you do have the stories from prior customer’s that you can convey (Feel) so the next can identify (Felt) and see the solution (Found) used to overcome the challenge. Again most do not like to read, hence the popularity of video for web advertising. Commercials are proven and do work. You are able to paint a picture and convey the Feel, Felt, Found, within a moment of someone accessing your website video. How many times have you seen a late night commercial that will whisk away all your challenges for a particular issue? You can almost visualize the commercial for what you are recalling. They do work, that is why commercials are used.

We are not in competition to do a Coke commercial with Christina Aguilara.
